Who is eligible for an NBTF research Grant?
For clinical grants, qualified researchers include Ph.D. and/or M.D. at U.S. or Canadian medical centers. Quality of Life researcher need not be Ph.D., but must hold at least a masters' degree.
-
What types of grants do you fund?
NBTF prefers projects that are translational and will move quickly from the research bench to patient application. Grants that are collaborative and multi-disciplinary are also encouraged.
-
What is the typical project term?
Standard duration of a grant award is 12 months from issuance of the award check.
-
May multiple researchers from the same institution apply for the same grant?
Yes, NBTF will accept multiple applications from the same institution or the same researcher. However, researchers can apply for only one grant type with the same proposal. For example, you cannot submit the same research proposal for more than one NBTF grant.
-
How many NBTF grants are available at any one time?
In general, NBTF requests project proposals once a year. The exact number is dependent on the research dollars donated to NBTF. The NBTF Board is committed to increasing funding each year. We also award grants through the American Association of Neurosurgeons (AANS). Please contact AANS for their applications and deadlines.
-
Are there any restrictions on grants awarded
All NBTF grant monies awarded will be used on bona fide research costs of projects that improve treatments and/or the quality of life of brain tumor patients. NBTF grant monies cannot be used for general administrative costs, debt reduction, or indirect costs of the project. Researchers will provide a written project report at a 6 month period and at the end of the grant award period and will acknowledge NBTF in all publications regarding the project.

What is NBTF's process for reviewing grants?
NBTF’s grant process builds on NIH’s objective scientific peer review. Applications are assigned two reviewers to independently score the project’s science. The average of the two scores are calculated to determine the project’s preliminary score. The preliminary scores are triaged and the top ranked projects (as well as projects with a 1 point or more difference between the primary and secondary scores) are reviewed by all members of NBTF’s Scientific Review Committee during a teleconference. Following the discussion, each member of the Scientific Review Committee scores the application and the average of those scores determines the projects’ final score. The NBTF Board Research Committee will than review the top ranked applications and the recommendations of the Scientific Advisory Committee to determine the 2008 Grant Recipients. Grant Recipients will be notified by phone, all other applicants will be notified by e-mail.
