Assistant Director of Marketing Communications

National Brain Tumor Society (NBTS) is a nonprofit organization committed to finding a cure for brain tumors. We aggressively drive strategic research, advocate for public policies that meet the critical needs of the brain tumor community, and provide patient information. Headquartered in Watertown, Massachusetts, with offices in San Francisco, California and Wilmington, Delaware, we host activities throughout the United States.

We are currently seeking an Assistant Director of Marketing Communications to work very closely with the Director of Communications to plan and implement strategic communications and outreach initiatives for NBTS programs and departments. This position will work out our Watertown location.

The NBTS Communications department integrates numerous disciplines, including web and online media; marketing and advertising; editorial; graphic design; video, photography, and broadcast; publication production; as well as media relations and some internal communications. The Assistant Director of Marketing Communications works closely with the Director of Communications along with the senior management team to implement organizational strategies as set by the Board, the Executive Director, and the Director of Community Relations.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide regular input to the Director of Communications and the Director of Community Relations, as well as senior and overall staff; keep organizational message on target; help to manage change
  • Initiate, develop, and maintain positive relationships with key local and national media contacts
  • Act as an organizational spokesperson when needed
  • Plan and implement strategic communications plans with designated Departments of Public Policy and Advocacy, Awareness, and Development
  • Collaborate with Director of Communications and the Director of Community Relations to set priorities across organizational initiatives and other deliverables; oversee resources required
  • Develop messaging, content, scripts, interview responses, and other copy needs; copy edit/proofread provided content
  • Contribute to organizational online communications including regular website and social media updates, eNewsletters, eAppeals, and ongoing announcements to maximize outreach for awareness, advocacy, recruiting, fundraising, and other organizational initiatives.
  • Contribute to the development of external organizational communications including newsletters, brochures, web content, annual reports, and other marketing materials
  • Coordinate marketing and communications efforts to ensure that the outreach schedule is balanced and brand consistency is maintained
  • Evaluate the success of all marketing and communications initiatives and provide insight on future enhancements and improvements
  • Manage outreach to newly diagnosed celebrities and public figures; coordinate with Awareness
  • Manage special projects as necessary

Required Abilities:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications or closely related field.
  • Six+ years of progressive experience in marketing, communications, and/or nonprofit management roles.
  • Demonstrated ability to strategize, organize, articulate message, prioritize across parallel initiatives, and have the confidence of senior management.
  • Experience in media relations and PR.
  • Experience as an organization’s spokesperson and ability to think/speak quickly about numerous topics.
  • Experience working collaboratively on teams.
  • Superior writing, verbal, interpersonal, and management skills.
  • Expertise in the use of social networking tools and techniques.
  • Experience with video editing preferred.
  • Ability and willingness to travel.
